About

Welcome to the first on-line searchable database of primer sets useful for the detection of plant pathogenic fungi.

The idea was inspired by the article “THE THREE Ds OF PCR-BASED GENOMIC ANALYSIS OF PHYTOBACTERIA: Diversity,Detection, and Disease Diagnosis” by FJ Louws (1999), in which the authors listed a short but comprehensive collection of primer sets for the detection and identification of phytopathogenic bacteria.

The collection of specific primers for plant pathogenic fungi was first published as a table on an italian specialized journal of national circulation [Ghignone S. and Migheli Q. (2001) Nuovi strumenti di diagnosi per i funghi fitopatogeni -tecniche basate sull’analisi degli acidi nucleici. Informatore Fitopatologico 51 (3):7-22], and later expanded and organized as a searchable database.

The database is currently curated by dr. Stefano Ghignone, researcher at Istituto per la Protezione Sostenibile delle Piante – Turin Unit (CNR) and dr. Quirico Migheli, Professor at University of Sassari, and is open to user contributions.

In February 2012, the site moved on a new server and its look has been updated. In February 2023, the site undergo further development and updates, after moving to an even newer location.

While the database currently devoted to fungal organisms, in a future perspective ( this future is very close, stay tuned! ) the database may host primer sets specific to other phytopathogens, such as viruses or bacteria, including microbial herbicides and biological agents relevant in agroterrorism.
